Criminal Background Check, Mentoring Your Workforce, Hiring

In today’s Weekend Roundup, Arizona eases restrictions for workers with criminal backgrounds and the Harvard Business Review looks at how mentoring in the workplace occurs in a hybrid workplace. While millions are unemployed, some companies still can’t find enough people to hire. Click the headlines below to learn more.

Arizona Eases Certain Restrictions for Workers with Criminal Histories

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey recently signed HB 2067 into law amending Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) Section 13-905 to allow persons convicted of certain criminal offenses the opportunity to set aside a prior conviction and seek a Certificate of Second Chance. The law permits such second chances for employment opportunities, occupational licenses, and housing. Arizona does not have a pure expungement law completely erasing convictions from a person’s records, but A.R.S. Section 13-905 allows for certain convictions to be set aside.

What Great Mentorship Looks Like in a Hybrid Workplace

Remote work has been an adjustment (to say the least) for everyone, and its effect on our professional relationships has been just as significant as the impact on daily tasks. For early-career employees, the lack of casual conversations at work poses a considerable challenge. How does one learn best practices to succeed in one’s career when you’re working alone from home? How does one build the professional relationships that are critical for survival and advancement? On the organizational side, how does the business build a culture that supports diversity and inclusion initiatives in the middle of a pandemic? Based on our recent experience leading organizations focused on online mentorship, we believe an organizational commitment to mentorship can address all these issues.

Millions Are Unemployed. Why Can’t Companies Find Workers?

In a red-hot economy coming out of a pandemic and lockdowns, with unemployment still far higher than it was pre-Covid, the country is in a striking predicament. Businesses can’t find enough people to hire. Rising vaccination rates, easing lockdowns and enormous amounts of federal stimulus aid are boosting consumer spending on goods and services. Yet employers in sectors like manufacturing, restaurants and construction are struggling to find workers.
