Do Drug Tests Screen for CBD Products?

Many are hopping on the CBD band wagon, especially in states where legislation hasn’t passed to legalize marijuana in its truest form. However, it should be noted that CBD oil is not legal in all 50 U.S. states. Advocates of CBD oil praise the substance’s apparent calming side effects, which have made the substance a popular choice for a variety of ailments and pain relief. As the drug increases in popularity, many of our customers have come to KRESS inquiring about the possibility to test for CBD oil. It is indeed possible and necessary to test for all traces of THC, no matter the source.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is one of 104 chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant, or marijuana. It’s a substance that can be naturally extracted from the plant and is usually mixed with hemp seed or coconut oil to create CBD products and maintain their shelf life. CBD doesn’t cause the same reaction in the brain as its popular counterpart—THC—that most would describe as a high. Any substance you put into your body interacts with a wide variety of internal systems, causing a wide range of various side effects. This chemical response takes the form of many different highs. So, what is the high and effect of using this CBD products? Immediate effects of consuming CBD oil cause dry mouth, low blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, dizziness, and drowsiness along with harmful—potentially lethal—chemical reactions when mixed with pharmaceutical medications. Some of these effects lead people to wonder how long does cbd last, but in truth, the effects of CBD are not as dramatic as those of THC, and CBD products can have many positive effects. If you are interested in experiencing these positive effects (and CBD is legal where you live), then you can check out this cbd review website here.

Will a drug test detect traces of CBD oil?

Most CBD products only have 0.3 percent of THC. CBD products remain unregulated, making most companies’ brand promises unreliable regarding the amount of THC actually in each recommended dose. Sometimes, users can be consuming more THC than they expect. For an employee to test positive on a drug test after using CBD oil or other products, they would have to be consuming unusually large and dangerous amounts that could cause impairment. If someone were to consume high enough quantities, a proper drug screening could definitely pick up traces of THC and return a positive test result. There are those who are worried about the legality of CBD where they live, there are resources out there that can help tell you the legality of CBD oil with state information.

How should employers approach drug testing and CBD products?

The FDA has worked hard to ensure the public is aware that CBD products may have less or more THC levels than companies claim. In some cases, users can be prescribed CBD oil to treat anxiety, seizures, and other ailments. On June 27, the FDA voted 13–0 to approve a CBD drug, Epidiolex. All HR departments should develop medical disclosure policies in the case current or future employees need to disclose CBD-prescribed drugs prior to employment to avoid hiccups after the administration of a drug test. Even if the person being tested is taking CBD oil and not using marijuana, CBD has THC and can cause positive test results. Employers and employees alike should be transparent about the use of CBD products and testing for traces of THC on all scales.
