Many of us make New Year’s resolutions that are aimed at improving our personal lives or our family life. But what about our careers? Improving our lives at the office can lead to less stress both at home and in the office. When choosing your resolution this year, consider one that is aimed at your career and that’s realistic. Here are a few that are both realistic and sure you make you the office superstar in no time:
Make sleep a priority.
We’re always reading the news headlines that tell us about the latest sleep studies, and nearly everyone comes to the same conclusion that you need more of it and a full 7-8 hours is one of the best things you can do for your body. When you get a full night’s rest, your body can fully recharge. A lack of sleep can result in higher levels of depression, anxiety, attention deficit, and a weakened immune system. To make your life at work easier, make sleep a priority.
Network outside the office.
Sometimes, you just have to get out! Make an effort to get out of the office and into your industry’s community once per month. Even if you’re content with your current position, many industry events allow you to learn more about the latest innovations in your field. You may also meet new vendors or potential future partners. To make these events even more fruitful, bring a few coworkers and use the time as a team bonding experience.
Clean out your inbox.
No, you don’t have to go through every email one-by-one. To clean out your inbox, all you have to do is unsubscribe from non-work related emails and those annoying newsletters. These unnecessary emails can distract us from our daily work and waste time. Use an app like Unroll.me, which shows you a list of every email list you’re subscribed to and lets you easily unsubscribe from all of them.
Read industry news every day.
Take a break from the sports and pop culture news. Take the time to read one or two articles each day that pertain to your industry. This will help you stay ahead of the the curve and you may find ways to become even more efficient with the tips you find along the way. For a monthly roundup of all things HR, you can subscribe to the KRESS newsletter! We promise never to spam you and send only the best from HR news.
Evaluate your career.
When’s the last time you really thought about the future of your career? Take today to mark in your calendar an evaluation of your career every quarter. Think of where you want to be in the future and what measurable goals you can put into place to get there. Start by looking at yourself in your current position, and list five things you can do to improve your work. This can include goals to improve client relations, coworker or manager relations, productivity, quality of work, or improving systems.
