Weekend Roundup: I-9 Flexibility, Hiring Frenzy, Changing Workforce

In today’s Weekend Roundup, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended flexibility for compliance with the Form I-9 to January 31, 2021. As the COVID-19 vaccine rolls out, pharmacies nationwide are ramping up hiring pharmacists and technicians to administer shots. Companies take a look at their workforce trajectory as trends are shifting for the modern career path. Click the headlines below to learn more.

ICE Announces Extension to I-9 Compliance Flexibility

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) today announced an extension of the flexibilities in rules related to Form I-9 compliance that was granted earlier this year. Due to the continued precautions related to COVID-19, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will extend this policy until January 31, 2021.

Hiring Frenzy for Pharmacists as COVID-19 Vaccines Roll Out

The nation’s drugstores and groceries are racing to hire thousands of pharmacists and technicians to administer COVID-19 vaccines to the masses. Pharmacies big and small were laying off pharmacists as recently as summer, as the profession’s outlook grew dim. Now some of those same pharmacies and supermarkets are making public pleas, reaching out to retired workers and offering signing bonuses. Several retail pharmacy chains, including CVS Health Corp. and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., have agreed to work with the U.S. government to serve as COVID-19 vaccination sites.

How Companies Can Meet the Needs of a Changing Workforce

As life expectancies stretch towards 100 years, the traditional career map urgently needs a rethink. The over-50s are the fastest-growing group of workers in the UK, increasing by about 300,000 between 2018 and 2019 and rapidly approaching a third of all workers. In the United States, the proportion of over-65 workers has doubled to 20 percent since 1985 and accounts for 53 percent of the college-educated workforce. Boomers are starting to think that retiring at 65—when you may live to 80 or 90—leaves a little too much time for golf. And that means we need to start redefining the standard career trajectory.
